To the owners of Barrel 21 Distillery & Dining:
I made a reservation a week before Father\'s Day for three people at 1pm on Sunday, June 18. I called that morning and spoke with Nate to ask if we could come at 2pm. He said that wasn\'t a problem. I mentioned that I made the reservation on Open Table and he said that he would update the time. We arrived at 2pm and the manager said the restaurant was closed. We explained that we confirmed our reservation but she didn\'t seem to care. My husband and I had driven 275 miles to visit our daughter and now had no place to celebrate Father\'s Day. The manager could not have cared less. She offered no other places to dine, did not offer us a drink or anything. We sat in the parking lot for 15 minutes trying to find another restaurant in an area we are not familiar with while she and the other staff members went about their daily tasks. I will make sure to tell everyone I know that your restaurant ruined my family\'s Father\'s Day. Shame on you!

I was really looking forward to my dinner here with my girlfriend as I am a big fan of Ottos, but I was utterly disappointed by my experience.

Upon being seated at my table I found a dirty napkin was on the chair next to me. I also realized that I wasn\'t served the bread as the other customers around me had been.

I ordered my appetizers quickly and received then promptly. But my waitress took about 20 mins before I got her attention to order our main courses. The entire meal was over salted. We had the brie small plate, the gochujang meatballs, the chicken, and a filet. All salty.

During the entire dinning experience I never received a refill on my glass of water that I had finished within minutes of being seated.

I was just very disappointed by the dining experience that I had really looked forward to

I ordered the airline chicken breast which was quite delicious - not dry at all. However, a few touches could really make that dish - I think it was missing a sauce. A little jus on the plate would\'ve really brought it together!

The snapper however (at least in my humble opinion) was sort of ill conceived from the start. The fish was a bit bland and chewy and then the leek fondue was just a really unappealing color and ate like a cafeteria food. The result was that aside from a few (and I stress FEW) matchstick potatoes that are really uninteresting, the whole texture of the dish was quite mushy.

The seafood chowder was light and subtly delicious! The house salad was awesome - so balanced with the sweet apples and bitter celery leaves. Also, the desserts were great - especially the baked Alaska and the frangipane. The oranges on the creme brulee were not caramelized as advertised but it was still pretty tasty.
Server was very nice!

I made reservations for four persons to dine at a table at 6:30pm Nov. 12, 2016 cost of $ 142.56+ (that included only 2 beers and 2 Iced teas). We arrived at 6:15 said we would wait at the bar. My experience was the biggest waste of time, effort and money I\'ve had in a long, LONG time. We four were seated at a small hightop with room only enough for drinks and located in front of the bathrooms doors. After explaining that there would not be enough room for four dinner plates much less anything else, we were told a table was not available because so many walk-ins had taken the tables (remember we had made reservations). Many tables had only two persons eating dinner. At 6:55 we were able to finally order hors d\'oeuvres 20 minutes later, told that they were already out of our selections and would have to make substitutions. Because it was a birthday celebration I didn\'t even feel that I could leave, but only try to make the best of a bad situation. The meal actually went downhill from there.

I am enjoying the new menu quite a bit, but I recently had the lobster summer roll oh man what a mess. it was so large it was hard to hold. It collapsed and made quite a mess. It could have easily been turned into 4 pieces much smaller and easier to deal with. Easier to share as well.

I was disappointed to find that you moved to only Otto\'s beer. While I love and enjoy Otto\'s beer I can always go next door to get that. I enjoyed having the new beers from other PA breweries to explore along with a sampling of Otto\'s beers. Carry all of Otto\'s beers and provide some other options and I find B21 to be a much quieter and relaxed setting then Otto\'s for an quick after work beer/beverage.
Brunch:
I\'m also missing the Bloody diversity on brunch days.
Brunch is awesome! But please remember to label anything with nuts. Some of us could have a very bad experience if we grab the wrong item. I always have to ask and servers don\'t always know.

Brunch buffet was excellent and diverse in offerings, however the fruit you provided was definitely not fresh (or new) and it\'s taste reflected that. Disappointing especially with so many farms around.

Hello, I came in for the Valentine\'s brunch. I was very disappointed. I had to ask for a waiter to come over to our table to serve us. We waited for awhile and no one ever came over. Several of the food items on the buffet were quite picked over or completely empty. The french toast was completely soggy and unappetizing. I asked our server for strawberries for the chocolate fountain. She said there weren\'t any. We sat on the side facing Atherton. You really need blinds. My husband needed sunglasses to eat. Overall, I found the experience to be quite disappointing, especially for a special occasion meal.

I travel and dine out often, and our server, Chad, delivered absolutely stellar customer service, particularly in relation to previous dining experiences at other restaurants. He was very engaging and was \"on point\" with the wine and food recommendations. I always appreciate a person who has a sincere appreciation of the food and beverages he/she is servicing, and Chad was truly exceptional, from start to finish.

While our food was tasty, the value was disappointing. I appreciate the concept of tapas dining as small plates to share, but when each plate costs more than an entree at many restaurants in the area, I would like to see either great quality or a portion large enough to serve as an entree. Our service was adequate, but our server had few suggestions/recommendations when I expressed a specific dietary need-- a newly diagnosed diabetic who must limit my carbohydrate intake. My greatest disappointment, though, came after dining. While we ate, I accidentally dropped the two $20 bills I had in my pocket. I was very distraught when I realized and too embarrassed to go back to the restaurant and search. I instead called. It was not yet 9:30, and the restaurant was open until 10, so I was surprised to reach an answering machine both times I attempted to call. I left a detailed message, asking the servers please keep an eye. I never received even a call back to let me know my message was heard.

Food was delicious and beautifully presented. There was a sparse crowd (post-holiday); however, we were seated next to a family with 3 small children. Throughout their meal, the father was loudly conducting lessons and quizzes. In retrospect, we should have requested, or been assigned alternative seating, which was clearly available.

Service was excellent. Alex did a great job. The food was just average. I should have learned my lesson long ago to never order seafood in Pennsylvania...I still shouldn\'t ever seafood in PA. We were served the oysters which were terrible. We were told they were blue point oysters. I\'ve never seen such small and flavorless oysters. The ribs and \"salad\" were excellent though. I would recommend more beef dishes for the beef lovers in this area. My girlfriend called the menu \"eclectically obscure\". She didn\'t get a real idea of exactly what she was ordering. Maybe that is what you are trying to do as a restaurant. I\'ve eaten in several tapas restaurants in VA and was very impressed. Quiet, casual and intimate dining. Your ambiance was definitely not that. We fortunately had a corner table with nobody around us. Overall, it was an average dining experience.

We live only minutes from Barrel 21 and finally got a chance to try it. WONDERFUL! A diamond in the rough! Fabulous decor, very metro & upscale yet retaining a casual air. The drinks were creative and delicious - I\'d like to see a few more SCOTCH whisky based offerings, though. I did have a Smokescreen as advised by our terrific servers, Amy and Emily.
The tapas were incredible! Every one we ordered was a delightful adventure and the reward was sublime! We really loved your bamboo-coconut rice with spicy Korean meatballs! And the desserts - sinful! Oh - LOVED the coffee from Cafe Lemont - wow!

*****HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

All in all - GREAT JOB!!! Can\'t wait to bring some friends or just come in for drinks or dessert!

It was fun to learn from Andrea about the new drink specials coming up and also how to submit this review online. She\'s doing a great job managing. Very happy with Barrel 21 overall. Love the \"guest\" taps -- would love to see more. Salmon with bok choy outstanding. Beet salad also (but goat cheese a bit mild??) Love the bread and dipping oil. This was my first visit, and I was really impressed by the menu. The food was delicious, but the wait staff really made the visit special. Our servers were Amy and Jarrod. Jarrod was especially pleasant, since he was willing to answer a secret question, and never even raised his eyebrows in disapproval when my dining partner suggested licking her dessert plate because it was so exceptionally good. (She had the Jolly Rodger Stout cake). Amy was also delightful, and didn\'t object to offer a substitution for an item on a salad. I hope you are exceedingly successful with your business.

Lauren was our server and was terrific. She was attentive without being overbearing and knowledgeable about the offerings on the drink and food menus alike. We initially sat at the bar while waiting for a table and the bartender did not seem familiar with the recipes and the drinks were a touch imbalanced as a result since he poured by hand instead of using a jigger. This was our second visit in a couple of weeks. We are Penn Staters currently from Canton, OHIO. We will be back many times when we are in town! Everything about the place is excellent! The tastes of the food, combinations and presentation are fabulous. The bread start is fantastic - I would suggest that you cut the size of the rolls in half as one does NOT want to fill-up on bread when the Topas plates are FANTASTIC. To date, we have NOT made it to the wonderful sounding desserts. I arrived yesterday before 12:30. The waiter brought us coffee and your beignets which looked great. Had a bite and they were raw in the middle. Went to chef to get egg white omelet and out of egg whites but not eggs? So went over to have smoked salmon...all gone. No salt or pepper, no ketchup or mustard and slow service. Place is beautiful, staff very nice, price very fair. Food availability and quality not good. Very disappointing as a long time pub club member and otto\'s fan. Our third visit, second brunch.
We cam in and were seated after 5min of not having anyone stop by the table we went to buffet and served our selves. We returned hoping for water or coffee but nobody stopped by. As we were nearing the halfway point for our plates I went to find a server. Who provided us with coffee water and bloody coupon. I had to find another server to get a coffee refil and after that she returned to fill water and coffee after a request. We had to wait and waive her down for a check.

Frittata was over cooked and not awesome. cannoli filling was good but crust was dry and powdery.

Bananas foster was very tasty buy impossible to get out of the pan in one piece. Two if very lucky.

Other the. Those the place and food was excellent.

Not blowing anything out of proportion, it was my first time there and on their first Sunday buffet. Omelette buffet was great, with many choices of added ingredients, (Sam makes a good omelette by the way). The Bloody Mary bar had lots of options as well, which made for one of the best bloody Mary\'s I\'ve ever had. The breakfast buffet had plenty of choices, including the best creme brûlée French toast I\'ve had hands down. The desserts were plentiful, with a wide variety, and a chocolate fountain! The service was great, not to be ignored. Our server Peter was always on point, and exhumed great knowledge of the establishment and menu. The staff was very welcoming and I can\'t wait to go back to try more. 10/10.

So glad Barr 21 is in State College. This is a very classy place with excellent food and service. The atmosphere was amazing. The only thing missing is live music. Hopefully you will consider adding live music.

Food was consistently cold, may otherwise have been quite good. One of the two servers was visibly bored / perturbed at waiting tables and a turn off. The pre-meal garlic and oil mix is extremely awkward and the candle beneath never stayed lit due to the strong draft. B21 has some promise but needs to work on food temperature and selection... french fries, for example, are not tapas because they have an interesting spice. Wine list is pleasantly priced.

The menu seems a bit overpriced especially for the State College area. The staff is trying a bit too hard (too many questions, too many comments and compliments and \'thank yous\'). The place is doing great, so maybe relax the atmosphere and the prices a bit and it would be even more popular. Good luck!

Went to your place for the first time. Food was interesting and good. Service by Peter and Kate was excellent. But .. . two observations. The acoustics were lousy. Too \"bright\" for easy conversation. Every surface was a reflecting surface, with no acoustic absorption anywhere. If your hearing is not perfect, it is very difficult to have a conversation in this environment -- which is one of the main reasons for coming to an upscale restaurant. 2. Too cold. There should be no need to wear a jacket in a restaurant on a summer evening.

We just moved to State College and have been looking for this sort of dining experience. We were so pleased with the offerings and quality at your restaurant. The atmosphere was perfect and service was outstanding. Our young daughter came with us and was so happy to sample the tapas. We will certainly be back and look forward to the seasonal menu changes. Thank you so much for bringing this quality to State College!!

Last night was my first time at Barrel 21 and the food was good but not exceptionally great. The baked corn custard was our favorite but the crab seemed a little \"fishy\". You could tell it wasn\'t quite fresh. The drunken clams were ok - the sauce was too sweet and almost too \"boozey\". Alligator chili was a fun experience - tasted great. And the Charcuterie was good as well but really needs to be served with bread. By the time it was brought out we didn\'t have any bread left and it was another $2 for 1 stick! What was I supposed to put the cheese on? Seemed like I was getting ripped off.

Recently, my boyfriend and I ate at Barrel 21 for the first time. We had a bad experience. We were seated at a terrible table (in front of the exit door), our drinks didn\'t come until the server asked what we wanted 3 times (around 20 min after we were seated), and my boyfriend\'s meal didn\'t come until 15 min or so after mine.

Yet were still charged full price. The manager apologized for the meal arriving late, and I assumed she would take it off of our bill, but she did not.

I love Otto\'s and eat there all the time, so I\'ll give Barrel 21 another chance, but I\'d appreciate a gift certificate or something for my boyfriend\'s meal.

I liked it a lot but I felt that we were really rushed. I would have preferred being able to enjoy the food in a more relaxed atmosphere. It wasn\'t as if there was a crowd waiting it was just that the servers brought things our one on top of another. The tables being so small made sharing the tapas rather difficult even though that really is the point. I will try it again.

My friend and I stopped in to try you out today (7/20) and would have never guessed that you had just opened. Everything was so put together and up to speed that it seemed like you\'ve been there for months. I was pleasantly surprised at the drink offerings (expecting wine and cocktails but was happy to see not only Otto\'s beer but a nice selection of guest taps) and our waitress let me sample a couple of drafts to help with my decision. Lauren, our waitress, was extremely helpful in explaining/answering questions about the food offerings as well. In fact, all staff we interacted with were friendly and fantastic. Andrea, who I remember from Otto\'s also stopped by our table to check on us. Beautiful decor completed a wonderful experience. Both of us were pleased with everything and will be back! Now the big question when we go out...Otto\'s or Barrel 21! Great work here!

My recent visit to your establishment was wonderful! Superb and friendly service, wonderful ambiance, and delicious tapas (kudo to the chef)! My party and I had hoped there would be slightly larger \"small\" plates since the idea is to share with the table. Looking forward to our next visit! Fantastic job and it\'s such a welcome addition to our community.

Very nice, however I have a couple of points to make ...

Two of the items were ordered were fantastic (Meatballs & Chicory Tart), but the 3rd item was disappointing. The item was the Korean Kalbi-style BBQ Short Ribs. Although generally good flavor, the $12 price was may too high given the portion size. I would suggest increasing the portion or reducing the price.

Also, as an Otto\'s points customer, I was surprised I couldn\'t get any points credit at this establishment

Great service & I will be back!

This is a welcome addition to State College dining options. I thought that the decorating and atmosphere were upscale and lovely. Even the water pitchers have style. Service was very attentive and friendly. Great selection of mixed drinks and beer. Wine list is relatively small, but reasonably priced. We had a great bottle of Malbec for $28. I also loved the shape of the wine glasses. We split 4 tapas and were satisfied. The cream of asparagus and brie soup ($4) was delicious. The baked alaska ($6) was outstanding and large enough for 2.

Great opening! Kristina was our server. She was extremely helpful, friendly, and efficient. She will become more \"polished\" as she becomes more familiar with the restaurant and offerings.

Menu was eclectic and interesting. We LOVE Otto\'s, but like having an upscale option as well. The interior has class and character.

Serving bread with the heated, garlic infused olive oil was great. Helped to fill us up as the entrees were on the small side (not a complaint, we thought the portions were appropriate). Pretzel stick was better than the baguette.

As Otto\'s Pub Club members, we would love to be able to swipe our card to have the food purchase count toward the monthly total. While we understand having separate loyalty programs, we would prefer to have a single, combined program. As a family with small children, we will end up at Otto\'s more often, especially if forced to choose between one program or the other.

Can\'t wait to try your own spirits once the distillery is up and running!

Overall a good start. For the 2nd day you did well. You can be 4 star.
I had a Gimlet and classically the drink is chilled and strained of ice or ice is kept to a cube or two. My Gimlet had a lot of ice - a bit disappointing and kinda ruined an otherwise good drink. The details in prep are very important for cocktail drinks. I also think the tables are a little too close. I am pretty petite ( 5\'4\" & 120 lbs ) and I squeaked through the table/chairs sideways when the next tables are occupied. Watching your servers was a little alarming - that should not catch my attention at all. Space the tables more.
The food was well prepared and well presented. Oysters were perfectly cooked. Chicory tart is good & Caramel MF is yummy - maybe a warning that the crystalized chili is quite hot spicy. I liked it but... A suggestion-bussing plates should be either a few items at a time or placed in attractive bamboo trays.

We loved our evening at Barrel21. Overall I\'d say it\'s a bit pricey but the quality of both food and drink was outstanding. There seemed to be some hiccups on the first evening, namely getting service from the bar to the tables and/or lounge area was slow. Perhaps there should be a bartender dedicated to the table service. Otherwise they tend to wait on bar customers first.

I give the building and décor a 9 out of 10. The staff was quite friendly and there was more than enough of them but most of the time they were standing around. I will give them a 6 out of 10. We just had Otto’s beer but the serving size was smaller (guessing 12 ounces) for the same price we could have received a full pint (16 ounces) had we gone to Otto’s to dine. The small plates were quite pricey for what you got. Plus you never really knew what you would get (portion size) until it showed up. One dish was some sort of short ribs that literally had 2 bites of meat. At $12 for that one dish is more than I want to pay for two bites of meat. The bill came to over $48.00 plus tip. That is for just 3 small plates (small cheese/cold cut meat plate / some sort of risotto in a bowl / and the short rib (very short) plate) plus 4 beers. I certainly would not recommend it to anyone who is looking for dinner. I would think it is more of a place for drinks and appetizers. Bring your wallet.
